How Credit Repair Works | Clear Credit Repair
A clear, step-by-step explanation of the credit repair process. No jargon. ACL 535271 licensed.
Overview
Credit repair in Australia involves investigating whether negative listings on your credit file — such as defaults, judgments, or enquiries — were recorded in compliance with the Privacy Act 1988 and the Credit Reporting Code. Where a breach is identified, a formal dispute is lodged.
This is not about “wiping” credit files. It is a legitimate, lawful process of checking whether your rights under Australian consumer credit law have been respected — and acting on your behalf when they haven’t been.
The Process — Step by Step
🆓 Free Initial Assessment
Call us on 0411 733 563 or email info@ccrepair.com.au. We will:
- Ask you about the listings on your credit file
- Explain what each type of listing means
- Advise honestly whether we believe grounds for dispute may exist
- Provide a clear fee quote with no obligation
Note: If we don’t think we can help, we’ll tell you at this stage — not after you’ve paid.
📄 Obtain Your Credit File
We require a current copy of your credit file. You can obtain this for free from:
- Equifax: equifax.com.au
- Experian: experian.com.au
- Illion (formerly Dun & Bradstreet): illion.com.au
You are entitled to one free credit file per year from each bureau. We’ll guide you through this process if needed.
🔎 Detailed Investigation
Once engaged, our specialists personally investigate each listing in detail. This includes reviewing:
📬 Dispute Lodgement
Where we identify grounds for dispute, we prepare and lodge a formal dispute with:
- The credit reporting body (Equifax, Experian, or Illion) directly
- The creditor who listed the item
- Both, where appropriate
We prepare disputes professionally, citing the specific provisions of the Privacy Act 1988 and Credit Reporting Code that we believe have been breached.
⏳ Investigation Period
Once a dispute is lodged, the credit reporting body and/or creditor must investigate. Under the Privacy Act 1988, credit reporting bodies generally have 30 days to investigate and respond. Some matters take longer, particularly where creditors need to retrieve historical records.
We monitor progress and communicate with relevant parties to ensure timely resolution. You will receive updates throughout this period.
🎯 Outcome
Possible outcomes include:
- Listing removed: The credit reporting body or creditor agrees the listing should not be on your file and removes it
- Listing corrected: Where the listing is accurate but recorded incorrectly, it may be updated
- Dispute not upheld: The credit reporting body maintains the listing is correct
If your dispute is not upheld, you have further options including escalating to the OAIC or to AFCA. As an AFCA member (83830), we can assist with referrals where applicable.
