What Is a Court Judgment on Your Credit File?
When a creditor successfully sues you in court for an unpaid debt and obtains a judgment in their favour, that judgment is recorded on your credit file. Court judgments are serious negative listings that remain on your file for up to 5 years from the date of the judgment.
A court judgment on your file can mean:
- ❌ Rejection of home loans, car loans, personal loans
- ❌ Inability to refinance existing debt
- ❌ Higher risk premiums applied by lenders
- ❌ Difficulty in business credit applications

✅ The judgment has been set aside by the court
✅ Improper service — you were not properly notified of proceedings
✅ The debt was paid or settled before the judgment was entered
✅ The listing does not accurately reflect the status of the judgment

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a court judgment be removed from my credit file?
In certain circumstances, yes. Judgments can be removed where they were listed in error, the judgment has been set aside, there were service issues, or where the reporting did not comply with the Privacy Act 1988. We investigate the specific circumstances of your judgment to determine whether grounds exist.
What if the judgment was legitimate?
Even where the underlying debt was legitimate, there may be grounds relating to how the judgment was reported on your credit file. We investigate the reporting process separately from the underlying debt. If we assess that no grounds exist, we will tell you honestly rather than take your money.
How long does the process take?
Judgment disputes typically take 30 to 90 days. Complex matters involving court procedures may take longer. We provide regular updates throughout.
Does paying the judgment help?
A paid judgment is still a judgment on your credit file unless it is specifically removed. The listing remains for 5 years from the date of judgment regardless of payment. However, payment may assist in negotiating with the creditor as part of a resolution strategy.
